Home Safety Checklist After A Fall

A fall at home often changes how a family feels about the house. The place that felt safe yesterday suddenly has a dozen places to worry about.

If you’re reading this after a fall, take a breath. This checklist will help you look at the home with fresh eyes and decide what to change first.

Start With The Doctor
Before anything else, make sure the fall has been checked by a medical professional, even if it seemed minor. Ask what may have caused it, whether medications or vision could play a part, and whether physical therapy would help. A checklist covers the home. A doctor covers the person.

Retrace The Fall

  • Where exactly did it happen?
  • What time of day was it, and what was the person doing?
  • Was there a rug, cord, wet floor, or poor light nearby?
  • Was it a trip, a slip, or a loss of balance?

The answers show where to start, and whether the cause was the house or something else.

Check The Paths Used Every Day

  • Is the route from bed to bathroom clear and well lit, especially at night?
  • Are rugs removed, or fixed in place?
  • Are cords and clutter out of walkways?
  • Are frequently used items stored where no reaching or climbing is needed?

Make The Bathroom Safer

  • Add grab bars near the toilet and shower, installed into studs.
  • Use non-slip mats inside and outside the tub or shower.
  • Consider a shower chair or raised toilet seat.
  • Keep a night light on.

Look At Stairs And Entrances

  • Handrails on both sides, firmly attached
  • Bright, even lighting with switches at the top and bottom
  • No items left on the steps
  • A stable place to sit when putting on shoes

Check Footwear And Furniture

  • Shoes or slippers with a firm, non-slip sole
  • A chair with sturdy arms that’s easy to stand up from
  • A bed height that allows feet to rest flat on the floor

Plan For The Next Time

  • A way to call for help should be within reach in every room, such as a phone kept on the person or a medical alert device.
  • A neighbor, friend, or family member should have a spare key and know the plan.
  • A regular check-in routine helps, with calls or visits at set times.

When A Fall Is A Signal
Often, a fall is the first visible sign that daily life has become harder than it looks. Making the home safer is important. So is asking whether someone should be there for the moments with the most risk, like bathing, getting out of bed, or moving around at night.

If you’re not sure where to begin, that’s a normal place to be.
